The Invention System

It was suppose to be on deck for Issue 9 but it was accidently put into Issue 8 for a brief period of time. Here are some screen caps for it that I found off of the GameAmp website.

Someone's getting fired from Cryptic...

Hoard your salvage!!!! I wonder if the Invention System will be robust enough to facilitate an economy. How do you fellow DBer's feel about that? Good for the game? Bad for the game? Discuss!!!

I'm not sure what to think of this yet. I need more information on what can be made, how hard things are to make (rare salvage, etc.), and how much things cost to make. I doubt they would suddenly introduce a "loot" system that would generate an economy on its own. CoH has always been more or less on the other side of the "loot game", in my opinion. I hope that does not change too much.

That's not to say there are no loot items in CoH/CoV. All of the base stuff is borderline loot if you ask me. The difference between it and loot in a game like WoW is that the benefits the base items offer are granted to the entire group. In WoW, huge groups of people form raids and spend hours finishing them. For what? So everyone can roll on the chance of getting the loot from the super boss dude they just killed that may or may not drop what you want even if you win the roll. Whoever gets the super loot gets it for themselves and only themselves. It helps that one character and no one else.

So, to sum things up, I've always appreciated the no loot aspect of CoH/CoV. I was skeptical with supergroup bases and the items associated with them but I think they got it right. They are not things for an individual person that many have to work for, as seen in WoW. They are rewards earned by many that are granted to all. I hope they maintain this "design philosophy" if and when they implement the invention system.

My two cents...

Hmmm...I'm not even up on my salvage knowledge to even guess how how this is going to work. I do agree with Lionshade though, I hope this doesn't come to having to horde your salvage to make something cool and not be able to share it with your sg! Seems if you need a billion things of salvage for something it might end up being like some of the buffs, just not worth the trouble.

Well it's nice to see the buff station requirements were turned WAY down. One buff before was worth 6 teleporters! Now for the price of 1-3 pieces of refined salvage you are on your way.

I think this system was designed so non raid bases would have something to do with all those salvage items that only are used for weapons such as spells of power, alien tech, etc. Lord knows we have enough of those!

As Lionshade said, it really depends on the recipes. Salvage is not particularly hard to find in this game. Sure some are more difficult than others (unstable rad pistols for example) but I don't see CoX Loot coming in as an economy in the real world anytime soon.

Speaking of salvage, I need to go trick or treating today!!

"loot" as you call it is worthless. Time spent among friends be it running missions or just shooting the breeze is a treasure of incalculable worth. Salvage has its place (in the storage bin!), and prestige has its purpose (telepads!). But Influence and other "loot" have no value unless they can be shared with the group.

WoW SUCKS!!
