Good lord. I can't even complete that friggin thing. How do you do it?
the most important thing is to learn the course. Until you know exactly where the next gate is, you'll be tearing your hair out.
Next helpful tip is to run combat jumping, or a jump pack of some sort. It will give you better control, especially if you think you might miss the gate, tap a jump.
SS and SB help for speed, but if you don't know the course, you'll fly past the gate and be screwed!
Combat Jumping or Super Jump is huge!
Metoid did it on some toons with Super Speed only...he would turn off SUperspeed at the times when the speed was too much (i.e. sharp turns).
